Current Efforts

CvilleREA is an association of Charlottesville-based clean energy companies whose mission is to enable the growth and success of the local renewable energy industry through collaboration, community, and economic development. CvilleREA member companies work in a variety of sectors, including wind, solar, demand response, and energy efficiency. Our companies have invested more than $6.5 billion in clean energy development and collectively employ over 400 people.

  • Establish Charlottesville as the renewable energy hub of the Southeast

  • Advocate for the growth of the renewable energy economy

  • Support the community’s transition to more sustainable energy practices

CvilleREA’s Vision for the Next Five Years
  • The number of clean energy companies in Charlottesville will double, from eight to sixteen.

  • There will be a pipeline of management and technical talent flowing from UVA, Virginia Tech, and JMU to Charlottesville’s clean energy community through current student and alumni channels.

  • Charlottesville will nurture and attract clean energy start-ups from area universities and technology centers with its access to capital and start-up support services.

  • Charlottesville and Albemarle County will have adopted a community-wide goal of carbon neutrality and have a detailed action plan for achieving that goal.

  • Charlottesville will be recognized regionally and nationally as an up-and-coming renewable energy hub.

2019 Program Areas
  • UVA Collaboration and Integration: We are building bridges and collaborating with the UVA community, including the Darden Energy Club, the Office of Sustainability, and the Environmental Resilience Institute (part of the UVA Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service).

  • City and County Initiative: We are working with Charlottesville City Council members, the Albemarle County Office of Sustainability, and the City Environment Office, advocating for the city and county to set a community-wide emissions reduction goal and create a multisector action plan to achieve these goals.

  • Virginia State and Local Policy: We are working with Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) and independently to advocate for renewable energy policies that will grow the renewable energy economy in our local and state jurisdictions.

  • Collaborative Roundtable: This year, we will continue hosting biannual collaborative roundtable events that will bring stakeholders and collaborators together to keep each other informed about initiatives, challenges, and solutions.
