JOB SUMMARY

The Charlottesville Renewable Energy Alliance (“Alliance”) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit trade organization of for-profit renewable energy & energy efficiency companies located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Alliance’s mission is to establish Charlottesville as the renewable energy hub of the Southeast, advocate for the growth of the renewable energy economy and support the community’s transition to sustainable energy practices”.

 

The Alliance is seeking an Executive Director who will be responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of the organization.  Key to the success of these items will be the execution of fundraising activities and member expansion.  Other key duties include marketing and external stakeholder outreach.  The Executive Director will represent the Alliance as the primary point of contact for external stakeholders.

 

The person in this role is expected to demonstrate a blend of self-starting leadership and competent, accurate organizational administration. The person should enjoy working independently, but also seek out input from the Board, participate in networking meetings, and be willing to seek out corporate sponsorships from related or supportive companies not already in the Alliance. The Executive Director will be the leading “face” of the Alliance and must be comfortable in that role.


RELATIONSHIPS
The Executive Director reports directly to the Board and works closely with other team members, including Committee leaders. Management of an intern for assistance with administrative tasks may be required.


PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES


Board Governance

  • Lead the Alliance in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board

  • Communicate effectively with the Board and provide all information necessary for the Board to make informed decisions

  • Lead regular Board meetings by creating agendas, taking meeting notes, and guiding the Board through a prioritized list of items that need attention


Financial Performance and Viability

  • Responsible for the financial integrity of the Alliance, including submitting to the Board an annual budget and monthly statements that accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization

  • Manage the Alliance’s operating budget, ensuring the organization maximizes resource utilization to maintain a positive financial posture


Stakeholder Engagement

  • Become familiar with and strengthen the Alliance’s pre-existing relationships with external stakeholders including (but not limited to) the University of Virginia, the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and other state groups/agencies 

  • Represent CvilleREA at community events related to the clean energy ethos and economy (occasionally occurring outside of typical work hours) 

  • Work singularly to reach out to representatives of other public and political organizations to set up meetings to introduce and/or interface with CvilleREA

  • Materially participate in those meetings (often alone) to develop and foster relationships


Operations and Programming

  • Establish a CvilleREA event calendar and communicate/promote to the Board, Alliance members, and greater community (as applicable)

  • Organize and manage CvilleREA events, such as networking events/happy hours

  • Build a renewable energy speaker series in coordination with the University of Virginia for collaboration, education, and fundraising


Leadership Development Seminars

  • Further programming as proposed by the Director or the Board

 

Administrative Tasks

  • Management of Quickbooks for accounting and budget tracking

  • Administrate the CvilleREA bank account

  • File annual taxes

  • Track and manage any state or federal regulatory requirements as it relates to the organization’s legal standing

 

Marketing

  • Manage CvilleREA’s email and website (Gmail and Wix)

  • Manage social media postings and outreach (Facebook and Twitter)

  • Create and edit CvilleREA’s quarterly newsletter on Wix

 

Other Duties

  • Stay abreast of relevant policy developments at each level of government

  • Work with CvilleREA intern to assign, track, and manage the execution of administrative tasks

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

  • Demonstrated nonprofit management experience

  • Strong project management and leadership skills

  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations

  • Basic understanding of the renewable energy industry with a strong interest to learn more and to self-educate

  • Demonstrated experience in budget management, including preparation, analysis, and reporting

  • Ability to write and speak professionally and eloquently on behalf of the organization to a wide variety of stakeholders

 

COMPENSATION

The Executive Director position will begin as part-time (15 hours/week) but could be expanded to a full-time position if the ED is successful in fundraising efforts. This position will be compensated on an hourly basis at a rate of $28/hr. To supplement this fixed income, the Director is encouraged to seek sponsorships from outside the organization and will receive a commission based on the value of the sponsorships attained, with the remainder of the funds being used to support organizational programming and other budgetary items. The rate of commission is to be determined by the Board prior to the execution of the employment agreement for this position.
